Places in Penzance relating to the Bird brothers who fell in World War One… Click here for the background

The names of Richard, Harry and Clement are on the War Memorial at St Mary’s Church overlooking Mounts Bay.

Not far away along the sea front, then up Morrab Road, is 8 Morrab Terrace where their widowed mother Annie Maud lived. At least one of her four sons made it back to visit her during the four years of war.

It was here that she received the news of the death of three of her sons.

The fourth, Hubert, survived the war and went on to found one of the most successful construction companies in Canada.

Morrab Terrace, Penzance, where the widowed Annie Maud Bird lived after her husband’s death. Both 8 and 9 Morrab Terrace appear in the family papers. Descendants of Annie Bird believe that the family may have owned both properties.
The subtropical gardens a short walk away from Morrab Terrace. This in the early 1900s was an elegant part of Penzance
