Frank Johns joined the Canadian army at Valcartier training camp, a major recruiting post in Canada in 1914 with his good friend Leo Colgan, also born in St Ives. He became part of the 1st Canadian Infantry Battalion.
Valcartier is about 25 km (16 mi) north of Quebec City.
