The Homecoming by Herbert E. Butler

July 4, 2017 by Susan Roberts Leave a Comment

The soldier in this painting looks dazed, as if he has returned from another world that he cannot speak of. Suddenly, ‘home’ is a very different place. His family and friends are shocked at the sight of him. The artist, Herbert E. Butler, was born in London in 1861 but moved to Polperro, Cornwall in 1902.

This painting, which is in the collection of the Royal Cornwall Museum, was on display at Heart of Conflict in Truro.
