Fact sheet – 25th Field Ambulance

February 20, 2018 by Susan Roberts 14 Comments

Old Contemptibles

The 25th Field Ambulance had a particularly strong link to the Camborne/Redruth area of west Cornwall.

When war broke out in 1914, a group of St Johns Ambulance men from Dolcoath mine (between the two towns) signed up to go out to the Front. They were led by a local doctor, William Blackwood.

They served there throughout the war, were captured by the Germans in spring 1918, and returned home in 1919.

We have discovered many descendants of these men, and more links are constantly being made.
